Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

Annapurna Base Camp Trekking, often known as the Annapurna Sanctuary, is the most awe-inspiring Himalayan trek that takes you to the heart of the Annapurna massif, surrounded by the world’s most spectacular mountain scenery. Upon entering the sanctuary, you will find yourself in the lap of Mother Nature. The trek begins with a scenic overland journey to the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara from Kathmandu, and further up, a one-hour drive to the trek starting point. From Kande, you walk through undulating scenic paths, following terraced farmland, colourful pink and red rhododendron forests, and waterfalls, enjoying great views of ice-clad Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre.

On the green hillside terraces, you will see spinach and potato farming everywhere. As you climb up, buzzards start circling overhead. There are some steep uphill sections and narrow tracks while walking along the Modi Khola River. When you reach the site called Hinku Cave, you will notice that the vegetation is becoming thinner and the gorge is narrower. You will see steep snow-clad ridges on the left-hand side of the route and Mt. Machhapuchhre towering on the right before entering the sanctuary. As you pass through the “gate” and enter the sanctuary, you find yourself in a huge amphitheatre encircled by a solid wall of snow-capped peaks.

Annapurna Base Camp Trekking is highly recommended for those who appreciate the high mountain wilderness without encountering altitude sickness and can be completed in less than 2 weeks. Moreover, Annapurna Base Camp gives insight into the mountain life of the people and their rich culture and tradition.

The entire Annapurna Base Camp trekking routes are well equipped with lodges with rooms and food facilities, ranging from the typical Nepali Dahl Bhat (rice with lentils) to Pizza’s and Spaghetti. Hot showers are also available in most of the lodges.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek can be done in all seasons except in the winter. The perfect time for this trekking is after the monsoons and before the onset of winter. During this time, the skies are very clear and warm. The base camp is sometimes closed due to heavy snow in the winter. In spring, the huge rhododendron forests are in full bloom, which gives the trekking journey to ABC an extra charm.
